To Market, To Market!

We did it! Our first Market. It was quite a learning experience. Fashion Buying is a whole career and I now have some big respect for those who do it for a living. We got the crash course in fashion buying a few weeks ago at the Dallas Market. Dallas was a great place for us to start because it's a very friendly market for new buyers. There were plenty of brands we were able to purchase from and then there were a few we made connections with so that we can eventually invest in the lines they carry. We are a little nervous as we don't have much market research to go off of and we aren't yet quite sure who our consumer is because we've yet to meet her or him (shopping for her!).

The real challenge of being a new store is that you need inventory for the season that you are currently in and also for all the upcoming seasons. So we found ourself shopping for everything from shorts to parkas and our favorite phrase became, "what do you have for immediate delivery?". It was like shopping on steroids and we quickly found out that it's no small task stocking a boutique. Each day we found ourselves coming back to our hotel room and flopping down on our beds visions of A-lines, fit and flares, denim button downs, lace up boots, and maxi dresses zooming around like a whirlwind in our brains. I think I even remember trying to bribe Stacey to rub my feet - no dice. Instead, she suggested vodka.

Now that the great shopping expedition of 2013 is behind us we are looking forward to September 10th, the day we open our doors. We know all the effort will be worth it once we connect our first customer with something they LOVE and you can bet the moment that happens and our front door closes behind them, store some sort of ridiculous happy store owner - victory dance of joy will be in effect.

Should you happen to be that customer and want to see us looking ridiculous I suggest pretending to leave and then coming back to peak in the windows.

Here's a little page from our sketchbook from this years 2013 Dallas market. Notice that we got all our shopping done and still had time to pose for our picture in an awesome miniature tipi.
